Altermidya calls for justice and safety of journalists: End impunity now!
November 7, 2024

As we observe the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists on Nov. 6 and 7, we are reminded of the unyielding courage and sacrifice of journalists who face threats, harassment, and even death for uncovering the truth.

This annual commemoration underscores the urgent need for action against those who attempt to silence the press and highlights the fundamental role journalists play in safeguarding democracy and upholding human rights worldwide.

In the Philippines, journalists are at constant risk, confronting a challenging landscape where harassment, red-tagging, and threats to their safety are all too common.

Despite these pressures, they continue to report stories that amplify the voices of marginalized communities and expose social injustices.

One of them is Frenchie Mae Cumpio, a community journalist who has been detained on charges widely seen as politically motivated, simply for reporting on human rights abuses and environmental concerns.

Cumpio’s plight reflects the broader struggle of Filipino journalists working under challenging and often hostile conditions to uphold their commitment to truth and justice.

Around the globe, journalists operate in environments where accountability for crimes against them remains elusive. In Palestine, an alarming increase in attacks on journalists and media workers has underscored the pressing need for international solidarity and action.

We remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty and reaffirm our collective commitment to defending press freedom.

In solidarity with journalists worldwide, we call upon governments, international organizations, and civil society to reinforce protections for media workers and ensure that perpetrators of crimes against journalists are brought to justice.

Ending impunity is not only a matter of accountability but an imperative for the right to information and an informed, democratic society.

We urge the Philippine government to fulfill its responsibility to protect journalists, expedite investigations into violence against the press, and hold accountable those who seek to suppress freedom of expression.

We call for the immediate and unconditional release of Frenchie Mae Cumpio and demand accountability for the security state forces and agencies that have harassed, detained, and unjustly prosecuted her in an attempt to stifle her reporting and silence her voice.

Only through a genuine commitment to justice and accountability can we foster a safe environment for journalists and uphold the fundamental right to truth.

We call on our fellow journalists, media workers, and press freedom advocates to resist the pressures of self-censorship in the face of threats and intimidation.

It is only through our collective courage and solidarity that we can safeguard our community, uphold the public’s right to know, and protect the integrity of a free and independent press.
