FACT CHECK: Anti-Marcos book on sale due to a lack of buyers?
July 13, 2022

On May 31, Du30 MEDIA Network – a Duterte propaganda Facebook page – released a post claiming that the Ateneo University Press is holding an anti-Marcos book sale due to a lack of buyers.

The page posted a screengrab of a promotional post from the Ateneo University Press Facebook page of a limited sale offer of The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, an exposé book on the corruption and crime of the Marcoses written by journalist Primitivo Mijares.

“Anti-Marcos book. Binenta na ng [sic] bagsak presyo dahil hindi mabenta o walang may bumibili.” The caption states.

CLAIM:
Ateneo University Press is holding an anti-Marcos book sale due to a lack of buyers

RATING:
FALSE

FACTS:
The Ateneo University Press held a special limited offer of P450.00 per copy of The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos due to paper inconsistencies and lack of supply.

The product description on the e-commerce sites Shopee and Lazada further explains that the paper inconsistencies were caused by an erratic import supply.

On May 27, Reuters reported on the panic-buying of Martial-law related books following the proclamation of Bongbong Marcos as the newly-elected president of the Philippines.

Due to the high demand, the Ateneo University Press announced on June 7 that it would be accepting reservations for the said book.

WHY THIS MATTERS:
As of writing, the post has accumulated over 2,400 reactions, 667 comments, and 115 shares.

The post also seemed to discredit The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, one of the detailed and first-hand accounts of the Marcos administration during Martial Law. – Hyacinth Estrada
