FALSE: Kris Aquino stole government-recovered ‘Imelda jewelry’
May 4, 2022

On March 27, a video was posted on the YouTube channel ‘Patetong’ featuring an unnamed woman who made a series of accusations against current opposition figures, including claims against actress Kris Aquino.

At the 4:52 timestamp, the woman in the video asked why Kris involves herself in political rallies even if she is ill, claiming that Aquino threw her support behind the presidential bid of Vice President Leni Robredo to avoid a Marcos presidency that would prosecute her supposedly stealing the government-recovered “Imelda jewelry.”

CLAIM:

Kris Aquino stole government-recovered ‘Imelda jewelry’

RATING:

FALSE

FACTS

The Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG), the government body tasked to recover the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcos family, has long denied claims that pieces of the so-called ‘Imelda jewelry’ in government possession were lent to prominent bureaucrats and their kin throughout previous administrations. As early as 2016, Kris Aquino has already denied claims of her alleged theft of the jewelry.

Part of the recovered properties already in government custody is the so-called Imelda 3-part jewelry collection, which is under the safekeeping of the PCGG and is kept in a vault of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

Former PCGG commissioner Andrew de Castro disclosed in 2015 that the jewelry collection is under tight security and is kept in a vault that needs four different keys kept separately by the PCGG, Bureau of Customs, Commission on Audit, and the Office of the President to be opened.

President Marcos and his family illegally amassed roughly US$10 billion during his 21 years in power, of which only P174.2 billion has been recovered by the Philippine government as of 2020.

WHY IT MATTERS

The claim made by the video in itself proves that there were recovered properties that were part of the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcoses. However, the video tried to diffuse this point by claiming that an Aquino has stolen the recovered jewelry.

The woman in the video is referred to as “Lola Liza,” and has appeared in several videos that spread false information directed against critics of the Duterte administration. Her videos have been re-uploaded by several pro-Marcos accounts and pages on Facebook, Youtube, and Tiktok. The video in question has 221 views on YouTube, and the YouTube channel already has more than 8,000 subscribers. – Xander Ceballos
