“The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan welcomes the sanctions imposed by the MTRCB and NTC on [SMNI], considering the network’s glaring violations of accepted media standards and ethics and clear failure to fulfill its duties and obligations under its franchise,” pahayag ng grupo.

“Under the Duterte administration, it transformed into the main channel for red-tagging, terrorist labeling, disinformation, outright lies and defamation against government critics, activists, members of the press, the opposition, and virtually anyone critical of Duterte and his murderous fascist regime,” giit ng Bayan.

“It has become a purveyor of fascist ideology and a genuine threat to human rights,” dagdag nito.

“SMNI, its consultants, and its talents should be held accountable for peddling disinformation and hate speech, but should be accountable for those offenses and not for simply offending a member of the Congress,” saad ng pahayag.

“Even as SMNI and its supporters cry press freedom and freedom of expression now, may they also reflect on how they cheered on and abetted similar moves when these tactics were being used against journalists and newsrooms,” dagdag nito.

“The Union’s issues with SMNI aside, this suspension by the National Telecommunications Commission is reminiscent of the previous administration’s attempts to weaponize the law and muzzle [the] media.”
