#SONA2022 FACT CHECK: Pres. Marcos Jr. to improve tourism infrastructure through road improvements, upgraded and new airports
July 25, 2022
CLAIM:
In his first SONA, President Marcos Jr., said he will improve tourism infrastructure through road improvements, upgraded and new airports

RATING:
Missing context

FACT:
Marcos Jr.’s pronouncement on building more airports runs counter to his move to veto House Bill 7575 or the creation of the Bulacan Airport City Special Economic and Freeport Zone in Taliptip, Bulakan, Bulacan due to “substantial fiscal risks.” Marcos Jr.’s recent statement signals that even with the veto, more airport projects will be pursued in the next few years.

WHY IT MATTERS:
Backed by San Miguel Corp.’s billionaire owner Ramon Ang as a Php 740-billion project, the President argued that the airport and urban hub project “pose[s] substantial fiscal risks” and is a “conflict with other agencies’ mandates and authorities.” EAdvocates also note the dangers posed by the project to the environment.
Such dangers posed by a multi-billion airport project is not unique to the Bulacan project, and Marcos Jr. stating that his government will pursue more airport projects similar to this is a cause for alarm. – Dan Navarro
