The Altermidya Network strongly denounces the sanctions imposed by the European Union Council against the red. media and its founder Hüseyin Doğru, following their coverage of Palestinian solidarity protests in Germany. We believe this a conscious act by the Council to discredit the red. media and silence critical journalism.
Red. media has consistently reported on the calls of people worldwide to end Israel’s genocide of Palestinians. The media outfit has also courageously exposed how the German state targets pro-Palestine movements.
The Council must know that a journalist’s work is built on the people’s interest. Thus, it is inherent for journalists to document the voices of dissent and expose how the people’s rights are suppressed. Journalists must be able to carry out this undertaking without obstruction or risk of reprisal.
To silence critical media like red. is to deprive the people of their right to know. The attempts to discredit it and its founder adds to the growing number of incidents that purposely target journalists who choose to report on stories critical of Israel’s decade-long occupation of Palestine.
The Altermidya Network stands in solidarity with our fellow independent journalists at the red. media in holding into account those responsible for attacking journalists and suppressing the truth. Amid attempts to silence the media, we must defend fellow journalists facing repression, and collectively persist in telling stories being buried deliberately by those escaping accountability.#
